Design in a Time of Urban/Rural Divides: Quality of Life and Politics in the Built Environment

headshot of Kimberly ZarecorKimberly Zarecor is professor of architecture at Iowa State University where she teaches courses in design, architectural history and research methods. Her historical research considers postwar housing and urbanism in the former Czechoslovakia. Since 2017, she has been researching and writing about shrinking towns and the future of quality of life in the rural Midwest as a leader of the Rural Shrink Smart Initiative with funding from the National Science Foundation. Currently she is on a professional development assignment as a program director in the NSF Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) Program in the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) at NSF. She holds a M.Arch. (1999) and Ph.D. (2008) from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University.
